HOCHBERG'S VISION: IDEAS AND CONTRIBUTIONS*

In the Mind's Eye: Julian Hochberg on the Perception of Pictures, Films, and the World
Edited by Mary A. Peterson, Barbara Gillam, and H. A. Sedgewick. New York: Oxford University Press, 2007. 634 pp. Hardcover, $76.00.

This volume, actually two books in one, was planned to honor Julian Hochberg on his 80th birthday. It splendidly succeeds. The first half is a collection of 20 of Hochberg's less accessible articles and a new one that looks ahead. The papers are arranged chronologically, the first 19 having been published between 1952 and 1984. Almost all are theoretically oriented and historically informed. These papers highlight an impressive feature of his thought. Hochberg's positions change in response to new evidence and criticisms, often his own. This intellectual honesty strengthens his analyses. Hochberg does not fall into the common trap of championing an overarching doctrine about perceptual theory and then struggling to fit everything into the mold.
